Kackaamin Family Development Center is dedicated to a holistic approach to family healing and growth with the understanding that trauma leads to addictions. Our core 6-week programs have brought healing and hope to hundreds of families who have been negatively impacted by colonialism and residential school experiences. Recovery from addiction is a lifelong process and permanent responsibility for each participant. We provide an environment for physical, emotional, mental and spiritual healing.
Each client family who attends is provided their own unit for themselves and children while here, and we have staff onsite 24 hours a day. We believe every individual has the power of healing within themselves. Traditional Indigenous teachings empower our families to develop healthy relationships with themselves, their children and others. Built within our program are individual counselling and group counselling and education sessions. Children also attend programming (age appropriate) during the day through our onsite Licensed Learning and Toddler centers. We use experiential teaching for client families to learn and understand about Intergenerational Trauma resulting from the Residential School Legacy. We also include into our programming parenting skills that focus on attunement and attachment. We have a play therapist on site for children and youth as well. Culture is a heavy component of our program and central to service delivery.
Our program is structured and can be emotionally challenging at certain times, but we ask all participants to trust the process. We try to offer as many opportunities for laughter and fun as possible.
Our program includes AA and NA meetings, as well as off-site meetings. We also have Family Support Workers who assist client families navigate systems (i.e. social assistance, housing, child protection, etc.), so clients are discharged with a realistic after-care plan to meet their and their children’s basic needs.
Completion Ceremonies - The Butterfly Ceremony
